The electrification of urban delivery routes continues to advance in Madrid, and it is doing so steadily. The project “ElectriCity by Ford”, powered by Ford Spain enters a new phase of expansion after validating its model in real-world traditional trade environments. The goal is clear: to make it easier for small businesses to access 100% electric commercial vehicles and accelerate the transition to a cleaner and more efficient last-mile delivery system.
The initiative launched successfully at the La Cebada Market and El Rastro flea market, where over a hundred vendors were able to test the brand's electric vans in their daily operations. The results have been solid enough to scale up the project. Now, the program is expanding to new key locations in Madrid's retail sector.Barceló, La Paz, Las Águilas, Chamberí, and Prosperidad. In all of them, professionals will have access to electric vehicles on a loan basis, eliminating one of the main barriers to entry: the initial investment.
Vehicles designed for urban delivery
In this new phase, the protagonists are two well-known models within the brand's professional catalog: the Ford E Transit Custom and Ford E-Transit Courier. Both are Designed specifically for urban delivery, with a clear focus on efficiency, maneuverability and emissions reduction.

The rollout will begin at the Barceló Market, which already has both units until the end of June. Afterwards, the E-Transit Custom will rotate among the participating markets, allowing more vendors to experience the advantages of electric mobility firsthand.
Real advantages in everyday life
Beyond the environmental discourse, in this type of use and for these businesses, electrification brings tangible operational benefits in cities like Madrid:
- Greater flexibility in working hours: possibility of delivering at night (21:00 PM–7:00 AM).
- Easy loading and unloading: more time available in designated areas.
- Full access to restricted areas: including ZBE and Madrid 360.
- Optimized operating costs: lower fuel and maintenance costs.
- Unlimited parking in SER zones.
This set of advantages makes electric vans a particularly interesting tool for local commerce, where agile logistics are key.
Strategic alliance with traditional commerce
One of the most relevant aspects of this expansion is the agreement reached with Metrae (Confederation of Traditional Food Markets of Spain). Thanks to this collaboration, Ford positions itself as a national logistics partner, offering preferential conditions to retailers who want to electrify their fleets.
This move not only reinforces the brand's strategy in the professional sphere, but also responds to an increasingly demanding regulatory context, with the mandatory implementation of Low Emission Zones in cities with more than 50.000 inhabitants.

Jesús Alonso, president of Ford Spain, declared at the presentation event: «With this new phase of the project, we reaffirm our commitment to sustainable mobility and strengthen our partnership with key institutions and organizations to support the modernization of local businesses in Madrid. Facilitating access to 100% electric vehicles for hundreds of retailers allows them to make their operations more sustainable, reduce their carbon footprint, and contribute to a cleaner and quieter city. Expanding the agreement nationwide with Metrae brings us even closer to our goal of achieving a zero-emissions future.
Electrification with a practical approach
Far from radical approaches, Ford maintains its multi-energy strategy through its division ford pro. This means that 100% electric, plug-in hybrid and thermal solutions coexistallowing each business to adapt at its own pace without compromising productivity. The approach is to support the professional through the transition, not impose it.

The success of the pilot program and its expansion in Madrid lay the groundwork for a possible nationwide implementation. If the model takes hold, we could be witnessing a real-world example of urban distribution transformation from the ground up: small businesses.
In a scenario where sustainability is no longer optional, initiatives like “ElectriCity by Ford” demonstrate that the electrification of professional transport is not only viable, but also profitable and operationally efficient.
